Artist Statement:
As an artist and art therapist profoundly inspired by the enigmatic Nazca lines of Peru, I seek to bridge these ancient mysteries and mystical symbolism with contemporary artistic expression. Best seen from a distance, the Nazca geoglyphs etched into the desert landscape invite a deeper understanding of what lies beneath and the enduring allure of the unknown. Just as the top layer of soil was raked away to reveal the red soil below that became the Nazca lines and figures, we can unearth hidden parts of ourselves. I dig into layers of wax and oil paint glazes to find and create lines in a process similar to how artists of long ago worked with the soil. In certain paintings, I show the lines of my own body echoing the Peruvian terrain. These are the same markings that my mother and grandmother had on their bodies, linking me with those ancestors in my family lineage.
