Artist Statement:
Sophia Van Dyk is a multi-disciplinary artist based in San Francisco with roots on the east coast. She graduated with a BFA from Tyler School of Art in 2012. Since then, Van Dyk has been producing works that explore the different forms that photography can take. She has shown recently at Analog Gallery in San Francisco and the Bastille Design Center in Paris. Sophia Van Dyk’s recent body of work stems from her undergraduate mentorship with cyanotype master Martha Madigan, who taught her alternative processes and photograms. Sophia’s cyanotype paintings are made by layering photo chemical to exposure in sunlight with washes of acrylic paint which work together spontaneously and abstractly to create organic scenes of water and oceans. In a time when drinking water is becoming more scarce we are reminded, through these artworks, of its precious beauty and vital need for life.
